Dysphagia is an impairment of swallowing causing either aspiration of foods and liquids or difficulty consuming specific consistencies. For some, it feels like food getting stuck. This can be caused by weakness, anatomical changes, and difficulty coordinating breathing and swallowing. Examples of this include:

  • Coughing excessively when eating or drinking

  • Feeling like something is ‘stuck’ around the thyroid area

  • Food pocketing on one side of the mouth

  • Difficulty chewing

  • Recurrent aspiration pneumonia
